E42: The fascist claim for universal authority

The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana and the Palazzo dei Congressi are both metaphysical expressions that reflect the quasi-mystical endeavor of fascist theory to place itself in the past, present and future simultaneously. The buildings formed part of the ill-fated 1942 Universal Exposition in Rome – the spectacular event meant to justify Italy's expansionist aspirations. Their presence bears witness to Fascism's attempt to rise above every other nation and give once again to the Eternal City its position of leader of the world's civilisation.
