The beauty of smartphone color calibration

These colored circles are not light sources themselves. Rather they are a series of images captured of single wavelength light being reflected off a circular white standard, using a smartphone. In order to measure how a smartphone camera responds to light, we captured these images over the whole visible spectrum and matched the input wavelengths to the recorded RGB values for these beautifully pure colors. The resulting smartphone calibration is crucial to our work monitoring conditions such as jaundice based on the color extracted from non-invasive images. Calibration images like these allow us to move from the calm, controlled, single-wavelength lab world to the busy, messy, real world and make a difference to patients.
