Grandparenting Beyond Godown

This is a photograph of a 53 year old grandfather, Onono, carrying his 3-month-old granddaughter, Heavenly. He was introducing her to his home village in Palabek, rural Northern Uganda. Soon after Heavenly’s mother was born in 1989, Onono was forced to take his family to safety in Kampala, fleeing the violence of the LRA insurgency in the region. Since then, they grew up in Godown, the Kampala field-site of the ‘Anthropology of Smartphones and Smart Ageing’ project, but as he says, “Kampala is not home… Home is the real home in the village”. He encourages his children and grandchildren to check on their real home every year.
