Neural Crest Induction

Mr Benjamin Steventon, Anatomy & Developmental Biology_

The two pictures are embryos of the African clawed frog Xenopus Leavis. The purple staining marks early neural crest cells. I am studying how two signaling pathways (the BMP pathway and the Wnt pathway) control the production of neural crest cells. In the top picture, excess wnt signalling produces extra neural crest cells, as a smiley 'mouth'. In the bottom picture, inhibition of BMP signaling has produced a double axis, resulting in sad 'mouth', where one side of the origional neural crest has fused with one side of the ectopic neural crest.
