Towers of Babel
"Towers of Babel" was captured in April 2014, whilst shooting my documentary film about translation practices at the United Nations' Headquarters in New York. It shows the head of a translation unit looking out the window to the misty buildings of Manhattan, as he is talking on the phone.
The photograph encapsulates the main result of my investigation: the relative invisibility of translators as agents of communication within the organisation.
Symbolizing the confusion of languages allegorised in the myth of Babel, the towers represented in this photograph also function as an intertextual reference to Jacques Derrida’s 1985 essay "Des Tours de Babel".
