Alkaline hydrothermal vents present a unique environment within which life may have originated 4 billion years ago. We hypothesise that thermodynamic reactions within these systems may have been able to synthesise primitive organic molecules, the building blocks of life. During my PhD I have developed a method to simulate deep-sea hydrothermal vent conditions within a bespoke flow-reactor, allowing us to test this hypothesis. This image shows the novel method development of assessing different chemical concentrations in order to produce the most ideal hydrothermal vent structures; part of the exciting new discoveries in origin of life research.
