Clusters of Activity in Minicab Journeys across London

Entry No 74.jpg
Dr Ed Manley, Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA)

The aim of this work was to identify distinct clusters of activity on London roads. By breaking down the route selections of 700,000 minicab journeys in London into a network-based structure, community detection algorithms were used to identify areas of high inter-nodal connectivity. The resulting clusters – each given its own colour within the image – provide a differentiation of the road network based solely on usage. The process distinguishes some of the important routes into and around the capital, as well as more granular self-contained regions – such as Soho, Knightsbridge, and the City – within central London.
