Space in time between

Katja Ackermann, Bartlett School of Architecture

Space-in-time-between is a current art and architecture project which deals with modern city spaces and life styles. The image-collage shows elements of space-time relations – connections, juxtapositions and interruptions. A linear 24 hour time-use and activity-level diagram (with variations), which was derived from a survey, serves as an overlay over the two-dimensional diagrammatic representation of the city to form abstract relationships. The project focuses on drawing connections between uses of minimal “in-between –times”, (or sometimes so-called ‘wasted time’) such as coffee/smoking/chatting breaks over the course of a day and minimal ‘in-between spaces’ in an urban fabric, equally considered ‘wasted’ in the eyes of a public opinion and planning. However, since social-psychology studies have shown that “in-between times “ are necessary elements of daily life which allow humans to re-connect with themselves, interact with their surroundings and revitalize their social relations, could spatial interruptions represented in minimal “in-between’ spaces be considered vital parts of the urban fabric? ‘Minute’ free-time in ‘’minute’ spaces – an approach to bring use - bring entertainment - to spatial interruptions in the city and transform them into public (art) spaces and (architectural) communication devices.
