16 brains

Sophie Scott, Psychology_

This figure shows the structural positron emission tomography (PET) images of 16 different human brains, each a transaxial slice around the level of the auditory cortex (the front of the brain is at the top of each image). The images are reconstructions using the positrons emitted when 15O (introduced via a venous canula) decays to 12O. The ‘hotter’ the image, the more counts have been detected at that point, indicating greater blood flow to that tissue. Thus the cortex and the basal ganglia have a larger blood supply than the white matter and CSF, which look dark. In addition, the blood supply to the scalp can be seen around the edge of the skulls. These images clearly show the variation in the shapes and sizes of the individual brains, which can be round, long, oval, asymmetric. Brains vary like faces, with the same parts in subtly different configurations across individuals.
